TIDBITS of INTEREST, Part 6

1: ONE WENT 75 YEARS; THE OTHER ABOUT 36 MONTHS:

The Volkswagen Beetle would have been 75 years old this month. Its first year of production saw just 55 coupes built in 1945, but by the following year they were manufacturing 1,000 units a month. Before it was all over, Volkswagen had sold over 26 million Bugs. The last plant to stop Beetle (the Bug) production was Mexico in 2003. What an amazing run. Even more amazing is that the Toyota Corolla has outsold the Beatle worldwide in just a third of the time.

2: THEY CAME, THEY WENT:

FCA announced on December 21st that the both the Fiat 124 Sports Car, a shared Mazda Miata platform, and the Fiat 500L will not be sold in American in 2021. That leaves Fiat dealers with just one model for now, though FCA says they’re going to bring a new crossover SUV to dealer in the new year.

3: YOU TOO CAN RENT A NASCAR DRIVE:

For several decades now, most race drivers have been required to bring money, usually in the form of sponsorship, to a team. Don’t be shocked, the practice dates all the way back to the 50s. Even INDY and Formula One have most drivers paying to drive. Within the sport, it’s referred as “buy a ride.” For the most, part this practice has been kept on the down low, but one mid-pack race team NASCAR who happens to still one driver seat yet not filled announced this week that $650,000 will buy YOU the ride. That might strike a lot of folks as outrageous but trust me that a bargain. Now before jump out of your LazyBoy and rush to your bank for a loan, you should know that you will be required to have some racing credentials with a fair medium of success before the team will take your $650 large and plop you in the driver's seat.
