AUTO UPDATES and HOW to be a PROFESSIONAL RACE CAR DRIVER, Part 2

DID YOU KNOW:

...That Volvo Cars is planing to triple its electric car production due to increased sales?

...That Cadillac is about to introduce its wicked new V-series Blackwing Edition?

...That the late actor Paul Walker's 1965 427 Cobra is headed to auction, and is expected to bring around a million dollars?

...That Honda is about to introduce Limited Edition of the bullet-fast Civic Type R? Only 600 will be produced and they won’t be cheap.

Yesterday I attempted to answer a frequently asked question: “How do I become a professional race driver.” To try and answer that in the space of a website blog was not my smartest move. It’s not a simple question, and given that there aren’t very many direct routes, I was able to lay down some basic groundwork. So, where to go from here? A lot of road racing driving schools also hold their own racing series, and these are a good place to learn some race craft. Mazda, for one, has the best entry level and pro level racing series in what is referred to as “spec racing,” which means all the cars are the same. This puts the focus on driver skill. Currently Mazda has the best stepladder method of working your way up into pro ranks. Remember, it’s not just winning that will get you a paying seat; you must meet a lot of people in the business and be able to promote yourself and even learn how to secure sponsorship money. I should add that once you’re lucky enough to find a sponsor, you also have to promote them and this too will require expanded skills.

Mazda Racing is a good place to start. They have a number of different racing classes, including open wheel, production and prototype products. Several students have launched the racing careers solely in Mazda products and series and gone on to race even Indy cars. Starting with a racing school, some of whom use Mazda race cars, would be a great place to start. The advantage of a product supplies racing series is you don’t need a truck and trailer to haul the car; just show up and drive.
