The SLOW DEATH of the Internal Combustion Engine...

DID YOU KNOW:

...That the advent of electric vehicles is rapidly changing the automotive landscape as it applies to internal combustion engines (ICE), Even to the point as to affect pick-up trucks? The first battle cries of death to the ICE started about five years ago with the V8. Everybody, including the manufacturers, felt the boom being lowered on the V8. Its life became extended when they really became much more efficient. Though the number of models has reduced, the V8 still appears to have a few more years left in it.

The “experts” said that the entire planet would be switching to V6 ICE engines and for a moment they were looking right, but in large part they too weren’t proven totally correct. The V6 had and continues to have a few truly bright spots, but in total the in-line four cylinder has proven to be the engine of choice amongst consumers, in large part because they usually come in models costing less than V6 - V8 variants. Not a bad move given how much power these engines now produce while making some amazing gas mileage. The four cylinder engines have also created a market for themselves in Hybrid vehicles. Lighter, smaller and easier to package than larger engines, the four cylinder has become the best selling engine in vehicles today.

So, what of the death of V8’s and V6’s? Perhaps a bit oversold but not entirely unrealistic. The Government, who can’t find its fanny with both hands, has decided that pure electric vehicles, to include everything from semi-trucks to two seat micro cars, are what the world needs immediately. They’re pushing for all manufacturers to be building nothing other than electric vehicles by 2030 and outlawing new ICE-powered vehicles by 2050. In terms of getting votes this sounds, to most tax payers, like a great idea. However, they failed to consider the inescapable physics of “for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction." In this case where do we get, much less how do we generate, electric power to charge a country full of electric vehicles? With just a few hours of research, they would have discovered this country’s power grid is not even remotely capable of taking on the load.

Here’s a tip: perhaps they can take all the V8’s, V6’s and 4-cylinder engines they want out of vehicles and use them to run generators that will recharge the electric cars they’re forcing us to buy. The only really good news is today’s electric vehicles are damn good and getting better and more exciting everyday.
